The Nigerian government confirmed the evacuation of the country’s first imported Ebola case to Switzerland. The patient, along with her husband, was moved for specialized treatment after showing significant clinical improvement. The Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare announced the decision in response to ongoing medical assessments.
The World Health Organization (WHO) stated Nigeria currently has no active Ebola cases. Dr. Mohamed Janabi, WHO’s Regional Director for Africa, confirmed the country is Ebola-free following the medical evacuation. The patient was diagnosed with Bundibugyo Ebola Virus Disease (EVD), a rare strain of the virus.
This marks the end of Nigeria’s first Ebola outbreak since 2014. The case was imported from the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The patient was isolated in Abuja for several weeks before being deemed fit for evacuation. The government worked with international health agencies to ensure safe transport.
Nigeria had previously declared the outbreak contained in 2014. This case was the first confirmed importation in over a decade. The evacuation reflects Nigeria’s commitment to global health protocols and rapid response mechanisms. The WHO continues to monitor the situation closely.
