A $300 million fund has been launched to improve electricity access in Nigeria. The Nigeria Distributed Renewable Energy (DRE) Fund is a joint effort by the Nigeria Sovereign Investment Authority (NSIA), Africa50, and Sustainable Energy for All (SEforALL). The initiative focuses on expanding energy access for underserved communities and businesses.
The fund was announced as a result of the inaugural ASIS Global Action Forum in New York. It aims to support decentralized renewable energy projects across the country. These projects are expected to provide reliable power to remote areas where grid expansion is not feasible.
Nigeria has long struggled with energy shortages, with millions lacking consistent electricity. The government has set a target to achieve universal energy access by 2030. This fund is part of broader efforts to meet that goal. The DRE Fund will prioritize solar and other renewable technologies to reduce reliance on fossil fuels.
The collaboration between NSIA, Africa50, and SEforALL highlights international and local partnerships in addressing energy challenges. The initiative is seen as a step toward sustainable development and economic growth. The exact number of projects and timelines for implementation have not yet been disclosed.
