President Bola Tinubu has requested the National Assembly to approve a new external borrowing plan of $20.52 billion and €1.04 billion. The request was made less than 100 days before Nigeria’s scheduled January 16, 2027, general election. The borrowing plan aims to fund projects and programs across multiple sectors. The request was communicated in a letter read by Senate President Godswill Akpabio during a plenary session.
Former President of the African Development Bank, Dr Akinwumi Adesina, has expressed his willingness to support Nigeria’s development in any capacity. Adesina’s statement comes as a sign of continued engagement with the country’s leadership.
Political analysts note that Tinubu’s administration is under pressure to deliver tangible results ahead of the 2027 election. High Chief Government Ekpemupolo, known as Tompolo, has mobilized support for Tinubu’s re-election in Imo State. Tompolo argues that Tinubu’s policies are beneficial for Nigeria and that the President deserves another four years to implement his reforms.
Tinubu’s borrowing plan is part of broader efforts to address economic challenges and infrastructure gaps. The timing of the request has raised questions about the administration’s strategy as it approaches the election. The National Assembly will now deliberate on the proposal, which could influence public perception of Tinubu’s leadership.
