At the APC presidential campaign flag-off rally in Kaduna, President Bola Tinubu accused opposition parties of creating hunger and poverty in Nigeria. Speaking to supporters, Tinubu stated that his administration is addressing economic challenges, but he blamed the opposition for the current hardships faced by citizens. The remarks came as the APC prepares for the 2027 general election, with Tinubu seeking a second term.

Supporters of Tinubu filled the Kaduna stadium, with some alleging that the crowd was artificially inflated. Presidential candidate of the African Action Congress, Omoyele Sowore, criticized the rally, suggesting that the APC was attempting to misrepresent public support. Meanwhile, the APC has claimed that key opposition parties, including the PDP and APGA, are backing Tinubu’s re-election bid.

The APC has also faced internal challenges, with some members questioning the validity of recent senatorial endorsements. A faction loyal to Gbenga Daniel described the endorsement of Governor Dapo Abiodun as a “kangaroo arrangement,” highlighting tensions within the party. The APC has responded by adopting direct and consensus-based methods for its primaries, aiming to streamline its internal processes.

The campaign has seen strong support from government officials, including the Minister of Information and National Orientation, who praised Tinubu’s re-election bid. However, opposition leaders have countered Tinubu’s claims, with former presidential candidate Atiku Abubakar dismissing the accusation that the opposition caused hunger as delusional.

As the 2027 election approaches, the APC continues to rally support, while opposition parties remain divided on the best strategy to challenge Tinubu’s bid. The political landscape remains tense, with both sides vying for public backing ahead of the upcoming vote.
