Governors affiliated with the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) have begun organizing state-level campaigns for President Bola Tinubu’s re-election ahead of the 2027 general elections. The party has directed its governors to lead local efforts in their states, aiming to consolidate support for Tinubu’s bid for a second term. This move comes as the party faces growing scrutiny over its financial decisions, particularly the recent allocation of ₦1.12 billion to distribute 2026 Toyota Land Cruiser Prado SUVs to selected youth leaders.

The National Youth Leader of APC, Dayo Israel, announced the distribution of the luxury vehicles during a campaign event, emphasizing their role in engaging young voters. The gesture has drawn sharp criticism from opposition parties, including the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), which accused the APC of prioritizing political gains over national economic challenges. The NDC argued that the spending contradicts the government’s efforts to address hardship faced by ordinary citizens.

The controversy has intensified public debate over political spending during an economic downturn. While APC leaders defend the campaign as a strategic investment in youth engagement, critics argue it undermines public trust. Meanwhile, the party continues to focus on mobilizing support for Tinubu’s re-election, with recent events in Kaduna State highlighting both the campaign’s reach and the growing public discontent.

The 2027 elections are expected to be a pivotal moment for Nigerian politics, with the APC’s approach to campaign strategy and resource allocation under intense scrutiny. As the party ramps up its efforts, the balance between political ambition and public accountability remains a central issue.
