President Bola Tinubu launched his re-election campaign in Kaduna on Saturday, marking the beginning of his bid for a second term in 2027. The event drew thousands of supporters, with Tinubu flanked by his wife, Senator Oluremi, Vice President Kashim Shettima, and senior APC officials. The rally in the northern region’s capital aimed to consolidate support ahead of the upcoming general election.
Tinubu accused opposition leaders of exacerbating Nigeria’s challenges, including hunger and poverty, during a speech at the event. He claimed that critics were exploiting national issues for political gain. “They created the hunger; they created the poverty,” Tinubu stated, emphasizing his administration’s efforts to address these problems. His remarks drew sharp criticism from opposition figures, including AAC presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore, who mocked Tinubu’s claim of nationwide support, arguing that the rally in Kaduna represented a narrow base.
The campaign also faced accusations of inciting political violence. Atiku Abubakar, a presidential candidate for the ADC, alleged that Tinubu and Edo State Governor Monday Okpebholo were encouraging unrest. Meanwhile, APC campaign officials assured Tinubu of strong backing from northern power brokers, including traditional rulers and Islamic clerics, who are seen as key to securing electoral victory.
Tinubu’s re-election bid comes amid heightened political tensions and competing narratives about his leadership. As the campaign gains momentum, the focus remains on consolidating support and addressing the nation’s pressing challenges.
