Lawmakers in the Philippines are reconsidering animal welfare legislation after the discovery of 25 dead pets illegally dumped in Bulacan. The incident, which sparked public outrage, has led to renewed calls for stricter laws to protect animals.

Representative Leila de Lima, a member of the Mamamayang Liberal Party, urged Congress to pass a tougher animal welfare bill following the dumping. The remains of dogs and cats were exposed on social media by an animal welfare group, Luna and Furry Siblings, which highlighted the cruelty involved.

The case has also drawn support for proposed amendments to the Animal Welfare Act. Akbayan party-list Rep. Percival Cendaña has called for the passage of a bill that would increase penalties for those causing animal injuries or deaths. The lawmaker’s push comes in response to the recent incident, which has intensified public and political pressure for stronger protections.

The dumping of the animals, which occurred in Bulacan, has raised concerns about enforcement of existing laws and the need for more stringent measures. While no arrests have been made, the incident has prompted discussions on improving animal protection mechanisms.

This incident follows a growing awareness of animal rights in the Philippines, with increasing advocacy from both local groups and lawmakers. The debate over animal welfare continues to gain traction, with the hope of translating public outrage into legislative action.
