The Philippines’ southern province of Sarangani has closed schools and government offices for a day following a powerful earthquake. Authorities suspended in-person classes and government work on Friday, October 9, to conduct safety checks and assess damage. The decision came after a magnitude 6.4 quake struck parts of Mindanao on Thursday afternoon.
The tremor, which hit near the island of Mindanao, caused concern among residents and officials. The provincial government issued Memorandum Circular No. 2026-10-01, instructing the suspension of educational and administrative activities. The measure aims to ensure the safety of students, staff, and public workers.
This is the second major earthquake to hit the region in recent weeks. Earlier in September, a 6.1 magnitude quake struck the same area, prompting similar safety measures. While no immediate casualties were reported, the latest tremor has raised concerns about infrastructure stability and emergency preparedness. Officials are now focusing on evaluating the extent of damage and planning recovery efforts.
