The Department of Labor and Employment (Dole) has initiated an investigation into labor violations following the September 9 fire that destroyed the M/V June Aster off Coron, Palawan. The probe, led by Labor Secretary Francis Tolentino, focuses on workplace safety and compliance failures aboard the vessel.
Dole cited multiple labor violations committed by the ship’s operator, Atienza Interisland Ferries Inc. These include unsafe working conditions and potential breaches of labor laws. The investigation follows a hearing held on October 8, where officials reviewed the circumstances leading to the disaster.
The M/V June Aster, a passenger ferry, caught fire while en route, resulting in multiple casualties. The incident has raised concerns about maritime safety and regulatory oversight. Dole’s inquiry aims to determine if labor violations contributed to the tragedy. The findings could lead to legal action against the company.
The fire, which occurred in September, remains under investigation for its exact cause. Dole’s probe is part of broader efforts to improve safety standards in the maritime sector. The case highlights ongoing challenges in enforcing labor laws and ensuring worker protections in the Philippines.
