In one month, Nigerian police arrested a major arms dealer and 1,246 other suspects. The operation, part of broader efforts to combat illegal arms trafficking, resulted in the seizure of 3,172 rounds of ammunition.
The arrests were made during several operations led by Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun. The police emphasized their commitment to dismantling networks involved in the distribution of illegal weapons. The operation targeted individuals engaged in the trade of firearms and ammunition, which authorities say has contributed to rising violence in the country.
This crackdown follows a series of high-profile incidents linked to armed criminal activities. In recent months, Nigeria has seen an increase in attacks by armed groups, prompting government officials to call for stronger law enforcement measures. The police have been working closely with intelligence agencies to identify and apprehend key figures in the illegal arms trade. The operation is part of a broader strategy to restore public safety and reduce the availability of weapons to criminal elements.
