President Bola Tinubu has accused former Vice President Atiku Abubakar of misusing public funds to establish a private university, during a heated exchange over education investment. Tinubu’s remarks came as part of his campaign efforts ahead of the 2027 general election. The president specifically referenced a 2026 case where the United States forfeited assets linked to Atiku, citing it as evidence of financial impropriety.
Tinubu’s Special Adviser on Energy, Olu Verheijen, announced a separate government initiative to invest over $75 million in Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) infrastructure, highlighting efforts to promote cleaner energy. This move was framed as part of a broader strategy to modernize Nigeria’s energy sector.
In Rivers State, former Speaker of the Rivers House of Assembly, Mr Ikuinyi-Awaji Ibani, declared grassroots support for Tinubu ahead of the 2027 election. Ibani, who coordinates the APC campaign in Andoni Local Government Area, emphasized local backing for Tinubu’s re-election bid.
President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, also predicted a sweeping victory for Tinubu and the APC in the South South geo-political zone. His remarks followed a rally in Port Harcourt, where he reiterated confidence in Tinubu’s leadership and policies.
The political tensions have intensified as both Tinubu and Atiku leverage their respective platforms to gain public support. Tinubu’s challenge to Atiku over the university funding issue reflects broader concerns about transparency and accountability in public spending. As the election approaches, the competition between the two leaders is expected to intensify.
