President Bola Tinubu has directly challenged former Vice President Atiku Abubakar over allegations regarding the funding of Atiku’s university, accusing him of using education investments to avoid addressing economic challenges. Tinubu, speaking in Abuja, pointed to Atiku’s role in the country’s financial struggles, suggesting that his public focus on educational projects was a distraction.
Tinubu’s remarks came after Atiku’s campaign team responded to his criticisms. Atiku accused Tinubu of attempting to shift public attention away from the economic crisis by attacking his educational investments. Atiku’s Director of Strategic Communication, Phrank Shaibu, addressed Tinubu’s claims, framing them as an attempt to deflect from broader governance issues.
The exchange follows a recent court ruling that nullified the leadership of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), which Atiku leads. This decision has intensified political tensions ahead of the 2027 general elections. Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde has also warned Tinubu against actions that could undermine Nigeria’s democratic institutions, accusing the ruling APC party of trying to exclude opposition parties from the political process.
Tinubu’s challenge to Atiku reflects a broader political battle over economic management and institutional integrity. Both leaders are positioning themselves ahead of the upcoming elections, with accusations of mismanagement and interference in political processes. The situation highlights the deepening divisions within Nigeria’s political landscape.
