Nagoshi Studio, the game development studio founded by Toshihiro Nagoshi, the creator of the Yakuza series, has officially closed. The closure comes after the studio lost its primary financial backing from China-based company NetEase earlier this year. Without continued investment, the studio was unable to sustain operations or complete its upcoming project, Gang of Dragon.

The game, which was intended to be a rival to the Yakuza series, was in development for several years. Reports indicate that the project required an additional $44 million to finish. Despite efforts to secure independent funding, the studio was unable to find the necessary financial support. As a result, the game was cancelled, and the studio ceased all operations.

Toshihiro Nagoshi previously worked at Sega before leaving to establish Nagoshi Studio. The closure marks the end of a promising venture in the gaming industry. The loss of the studio adds to the growing concerns about the challenges faced by independent game developers, particularly in securing long-term funding. The situation highlights the increasing difficulties for studios trying to launch ambitious projects without major publisher support.
