China’s state broadcaster CCTV has continued its blackout on Real Madrid matches following Kylian Mbappé’s controversial remarks about Mao Zedong, despite the player’s public apology. The decision comes after Mbappé faced backlash in China for a meme that depicted him as the late Chinese leader.
CCTV did not air Real Madrid’s 3-0 victory over Racing Santander on Sunday, extending a television blackout that began earlier in the week. The move was confirmed by China Media Group, the parent organization of CCTV. The broadcaster had already skipped the first two La Liga matches of the weekend following Mbappé’s remarks.
Mbappé issued an apology for what he called “ill-judged” comments about Mao Zedong, which were linked to a meme circulating online. The controversy led to at least three Chinese companies ending brand deals with the French striker. The Chinese Foreign Ministry also responded, expressing concern over the remarks.
The incident highlights the sensitivity surrounding historical figures in China, particularly Mao Zedong, and the strict control over media content. Mbappé’s comments, though seemingly lighthearted, triggered a swift and severe reaction from Chinese authorities. The situation underscores the challenges faced by international athletes when navigating cultural and political sensitivities.
