South Korean chipmakers are recording historic profits as global demand for semiconductors surges, driven by the artificial intelligence boom. SK Hynix, the world’s largest memory chipmaker, reported an operating profit of 83.33 trillion won (US$62.76 billion) for the three months ending September. This represents a 632% increase compared to the same period last year.

The company’s operating profit accounted for nearly 80% of its total sales, a margin rarely seen in manufacturing. Revenue for the period reached 104.62 trillion won. SK Hynix attributes its success to rising demand for memory chips used in AI applications, data centers, and other high-tech industries.

The surge in profits highlights the competitive edge that South Korean firms hold in the global semiconductor market. While China has been investing heavily in its own chip industry, it still lags behind in advanced manufacturing and research. The gap remains significant, with South Korean companies leading in high-performance memory chips and AI-driven technologies.

The AI boom has intensified competition in the semiconductor sector, with South Korea’s firms reaping the rewards of global technological shifts. As demand continues to grow, the race for innovation and production capacity remains a key factor in shaping the future of the industry.
