Nigeria’s Customs Service (NCS) announced plans to deploy advanced cargo scanners and an electronic tracking system to improve port efficiency. The systems, currently undergoing final technical checks in China, are designed to enhance cargo examination and reduce reliance on manual inspections. The move aims to cut port delays and curb cargo diversion, which has been a persistent issue affecting trade efficiency.

The new technology will enable faster and more accurate cargo clearance, reducing the time spent on physical inspections. This is expected to streamline operations and improve the overall efficiency of the port. The NCS emphasized that the scanners will also help in detecting prohibited items and ensuring compliance with customs regulations.

The initiative follows a series of efforts by Nigerian authorities to modernize port infrastructure and improve trade logistics. Previous attempts to introduce similar technologies faced delays due to technical and financial challenges. This new deployment marks a significant step toward addressing long-standing inefficiencies in the country’s port operations. The scanners are expected to be fully operational within the next few months, pending final approvals and installation.
