India's coal-fired power generation rose in September, according to recent data. The share of coal in the country's energy mix increased as renewable energy and hydroelectric output declined. Energy consumption in India rose by 11.5 per cent year-on-year during July to September, reaching approximately 502 billion units.

The increase in coal usage followed a period of lower output from renewable sources, including solar and wind. Hydroelectric generation also saw a drop, contributing to the overall decline in non-fossil fuel energy production. This shift highlights the challenges of maintaining energy security amid growing demand and intermittent renewable supply.

India has been working to expand its renewable energy capacity, but the recent data suggests that coal remains a key component of the country's energy strategy. The government has set targets for increasing renewable energy share, but progress has been slow. With energy demand continuing to rise, the balance between fossil fuels and renewables remains a central issue for policymakers.
