India and Canada began their fifth round of CEPA talks, focusing on pulses, potash, and visa policies. The discussions aim to finalize the Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement before Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s planned visit to Canada in December.

Both nations are seeking to strengthen economic ties through the CEPA, which could boost trade in agricultural products and minerals. The talks included discussions on agricultural trade, particularly pulses and potash, which are key commodities for both countries. Visa policy was also a major topic, with both sides aiming to simplify travel procedures for citizens.

The CEPA negotiations, which began in 2021, have seen periodic discussions on trade liberalization and market access. This round marks a critical phase as the agreement approaches completion. The agreement could lead to reduced tariffs and increased trade volumes between the two countries. The Modi visit is expected to provide a formal platform for finalizing the deal.

The CEPA is part of India’s broader strategy to diversify its trade partnerships and reduce reliance on traditional markets. Canada, meanwhile, seeks to enhance its economic presence in Asia. The agreement could serve as a model for future trade deals between emerging and developed economies.
