Captain Smit Machchhar, an Indian pilot flying for FlyDubai, is recovering from stab wounds he sustained during an in-flight altercation with his co-pilot. The incident occurred on Wednesday when the flight made an emergency landing in Saudi Arabia. Machchhar was initially treated at a hospital in Tabuk before being transferred to Abu Dhabi for further medical care. The Indian government confirmed the move, stating the pilot was being provided continued medical attention and recovery support.
The co-pilot, whose identity has not been disclosed, is under investigation for the attack. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu claimed the co-pilot had been subjected to “Islamic radical indoctrination.” This claim has not been independently verified. The incident has raised questions about security protocols on commercial flights.
This is not the first time such an event has occurred. In 2021, a similar in-flight altercation in the United States led to increased scrutiny of airline security measures. The current case highlights ongoing concerns about safety in aviation. Authorities are reviewing the incident to determine if new protocols are needed.
Machchhar’s condition remains stable, according to officials. The Indian foreign ministry has expressed concern and is working with UAE authorities to ensure his continued care. The case has also sparked discussions about mental health and stress among airline crew members.
