Yemeni government forces have regained effective control of the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, a critical maritime chokepoint, according to Yemen’s Information Minister Moammar al-Eryani. The strategic strait, located between Yemen and the Red Sea, is a key route for oil tankers. The government forces, backed by Saudi Arabia, advanced rapidly along the coast with heavy air support to seize key positions in the Dhubab area, the narrowest point of the strait.

The capture of Dhubab marks a significant reversal of recent Houthi advances. The Iran-backed Houthis had seized control of the area last month, causing global energy market volatility. Government forces now report ongoing clashes with Houthi rebels in the region. The military operation is part of a broader campaign to reclaim territory held by the Houthis.

The campaign was announced by Yemen’s Presidential Leadership Council Chairman Rashad Al-Alimi, who ordered large-scale military operations to restore state control. The offensive includes intense fighting around the city of Taiz, a major Houthi stronghold. Al-Alimi emphasized the goal of re-establishing government authority across Yemen.

The Bab el-Mandeb Strait has been a flashpoint in the ongoing conflict. Control of the area influences regional trade and energy flows. The recent government gains follow Houthi territorial expansions earlier this month. The situation remains volatile as both sides continue to contest control of strategic locations.
