U.S. Military officials announced the creation of a new task force aimed at limiting Iran's ability to move sanctioned goods across land borders and the Caspian Sea. The task force, named Task Force Iron Gate, is part of broader efforts to enforce economic sanctions and disrupt the flow of advanced weapons systems and other restricted materials. The move comes after months of a naval blockade targeting Iranian shipping in the Strait of Hormuz, a critical waterway for global oil transport.
The U.S. Central Command is set to formally announce the task force later on Saturday, according to a statement shared with Reuters. The initiative is designed to complement existing naval restrictions by addressing land-based commerce, which has been a less-explored avenue for Iran to bypass sanctions. The task force will focus on monitoring and intercepting the movement of goods through key land corridors and maritime routes connected to Iran.
The announcement follows a period of heightened tensions between the U.S. And Iran, including a series of incidents in the Strait of Hormuz. On Qeshm Island, explosions were reported, though no damage was confirmed, and Iranian media attributed the events to unspecified causes. Saudi authorities have not yet commented on claims of attacks on Riyadh’s oil facilities or airport, which were previously reported.
The U.S. Has been escalating pressure on Iran since February 2026, when a conflict began, leading to stalled nuclear negotiations. President Donald Trump criticized Iran over the stalled talks, accusing Tehran of obstructing diplomatic progress. The new task force represents a strategic shift toward a more comprehensive approach to economic and military containment, targeting both maritime and land-based supply lines.
