Iranian lawmakers have warned that any new war against Iran could spread to Europe, as US President Joe Biden urged Tehran to reach a deal. Meanwhile, Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) reported that two oil tankers have hit mines and caught fire in the Strait of Hormuz, a critical waterway for global oil trade.
The Iranian lawmakers, speaking during a parliamentary session, emphasized that a military conflict involving Iran would not remain confined to the Middle East. They stated that such a conflict could have far-reaching implications, including potential involvement of European nations. This warning comes amid heightened tensions between Iran and Western countries, particularly the United States.
The IRGC's statement confirmed that two tankers, one flagged under the United Kingdom and the other under the United Arab Emirates, were damaged by mines in the Strait of Hormuz. The incidents occurred in the early hours of Saturday, according to Iranian military sources. The tankers were reportedly on their way to the Indian Ocean when they encountered the mines.
The US President, in a separate address, called on Iran to resume negotiations on the 2015 nuclear deal, known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA). He reiterated Washington's commitment to a diplomatic resolution to the ongoing standoff.
The Strait of Hormuz has been a focal point of regional tensions, with Iran previously accusing the US and its allies of conducting hostile operations in the area. The recent incidents have raised concerns about the security of international shipping routes and the potential for further escalation.
