US President Donald Trump said Saturday it was time for Ukraine to get a new president, accusing current leader Volodymyr Zelenskyy of failing to end the war with Russia and blaming him for high diesel prices in the United States. Trump made the remarks during a press briefing at the White House, where he also criticized Zelenskyy for rejecting multiple opportunities to reach a peace deal.
Trump claimed Zelenskyy could have ended the war “many times” but chose not to, suggesting Ukraine needs a leader more willing to negotiate. The president also linked Zelenskyy’s actions to the rising cost of diesel in the US, stating that the Ukrainian leader’s decisions on Russian oil refineries are causing problems.
This is not the first time Trump has criticized Zelenskyy. Earlier this week, Trump announced a major diesel deal with Russian President Vladimir Putin, allowing Russia to supply millions of tonnes of diesel fuel to the US and global markets. The agreement was framed as a way to stabilize fuel prices and support economic growth.
Trump’s comments come amid ongoing tensions between Ukraine and Russia, with the war in eastern Ukraine continuing to draw international attention. The US has been a key supporter of Ukraine, providing military aid and diplomatic backing. Trump’s recent statements reflect his continued focus on foreign policy and his tendency to criticize leaders he views as ineffective or uncooperative.
