The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) announced that over 9.32 million young Nigerians were newly registered during the 2026 Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise. The registration process, which runs from January to December, aims to ensure accurate voter lists ahead of the 2027 general elections.

INEC stated that the high number of registrations reflects increased youth engagement in the political process. The commission emphasized the importance of maintaining an updated and accurate voter database to ensure fair and credible elections. The 2027 polls will be the first since the 2023 elections, which saw a record number of voters.

This year’s registration campaign included mobile units and digital platforms to reach remote areas. The data collected will be used to update the electoral roll and prepare for the upcoming elections. The government has also launched awareness campaigns to encourage youth participation in the democratic process. The 2027 elections are expected to be a key moment in Nigeria’s political calendar, with several major parties preparing for the contest.
