Saudi warplanes bombed Houthi rebel positions in Yemen on Monday, according to reports. The strikes, part of a renewed military campaign, enabled Yemeni government forces to reclaim territory along the Red Sea coast previously seized by the Houthis. The Houthi rebels had been supported by Iranian military advisers during their takeover.
The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) stated that more than 130,000 people have been internally displaced in Yemen since August. The displacement is linked to the intensified conflict, which includes damage to infrastructure and injuries. The Saudi-led coalition has targeted Houthi positions in response to recent advances by the rebels.
The conflict in Yemen has seen a resurgence in violence after a four-year pause. Analysts warn that tensions between Saudi Arabia and Iran are rising, with the resumption of airstrikes seen as a significant development. The Houthis, backed by Iran, have been accused of escalating hostilities, prompting a stronger military response from the Yemeni government and its allies. The situation continues to worsen, with humanitarian concerns growing as the conflict disrupts daily life and access to essential services.
