The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has begun testing the Biometric Voter Authentication System (BVAS) ahead of the 2027 general elections. The move comes as INEC assures Nigerians that it is taking practical steps to guarantee free and fair polls.
The BVAS tests are part of INEC’s efforts to modernize the electoral process and reduce fraud. Officials have confirmed that the system will be used to verify voters’ identities during the 2027 elections. The tests are being conducted in selected locations across the country to ensure the technology functions effectively.
This initiative follows years of public demand for more secure and transparent voting methods. Previous elections have faced criticism over voter irregularities and lack of transparency. INEC has emphasized that the BVAS will help prevent multiple voting and ensure accurate voter registration. The commission has also stated that it will continue engaging with stakeholders to address concerns and improve the electoral process.
