Egypt has pledged to provide Saudi Arabia with the military support it needs to defend its security and stability, according to the Egyptian presidency. The announcement came as Iran-backed Houthi rebels in Yemen continue launching attacks against Saudi Arabia, targeting critical infrastructure and military installations.
The Egyptian presidency stated that President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi has requested an urgent session of parliament to authorize the country’s large military force to assist Saudi Arabia if requested. This move follows a series of missile and drone attacks by the Houthis, which have targeted Saudi oil facilities and key infrastructure, including the capital’s international airport.
The attacks, which have killed at least 12 and injured over 300, have escalated tensions in the region. Egypt’s support comes as part of broader regional efforts to counter the Houthi threat. Pakistan and Egypt have both condemned the attacks, reaffirming their commitment to Saudi Arabia’s security and territorial integrity.
The Houthi rebels, backed by Iran, have intensified their campaign against Saudi Arabia this month, with multiple strikes on oil production sites and military bases. The situation has raised concerns among Arab nations about the stability of the Gulf region.
This is not the first time Egypt has offered military assistance to Saudi Arabia. In the past, Egypt has participated in joint military exercises and provided logistical support to Saudi forces. The current offer reflects a growing alignment between Egypt and Saudi Arabia in addressing the security challenges posed by the Houthi group.
The ongoing conflict in Yemen, which has drawn in regional and global powers, continues to impact the stability of the Middle East. Egypt’s involvement underscores the complex geopolitical dynamics at play, with regional actors seeking to balance security concerns with diplomatic and economic interests.
