The Philippines has announced a $800,000 reward for the capture of Senator Ronald dela Rosa, who faces charges of crimes against humanity linked to deadly anti-drug operations. The International Criminal Court (ICC) alleges that Dela Rosa was an “indirect co-conspirator” in the killings during former President Rodrigo Duterte’s drug war.
Dela Rosa, 64, is wanted by the ICC for his alleged role in the deaths of hundreds of individuals during the campaign. The court claims he acted in coordination with Duterte, who was arrested last year and is now on trial for similar charges. The Philippine government has joined the ICC’s efforts to locate and arrest Dela Rosa.
Duterte, who served as president from 2016 to 2022, oversaw a sweeping anti-drug campaign that resulted in thousands of deaths. The ICC has investigated the campaign, accusing officials of orchestrating extrajudicial killings. Dela Rosa, a former police chief, was Duterte’s close ally and is believed to have played a key role in implementing the policies.
The reward marks the first time the Philippines has offered a financial incentive for the arrest of a high-profile political figure linked to the drug war. The government has emphasized the need for accountability, stating that justice must be served for the victims. The case highlights the ongoing legal and political tensions surrounding Duterte’s legacy and the ICC’s authority in prosecuting former leaders.
